Get to Know Mrs. Irby

We are now going to learn about Mrs. Irby, the former physics teacher, who has now moved to teach tenth grade chemistry. I asked her, as with the other articles, ten questions all together, five about her professional life and five about her home life.

The first five about her professional life:

Why did you chose to move to teaching chemistry?

Mrs. Lanigan was going on maternity leave and it was hard to find a science teacher in the middle of the year and we started looking right away and we found Mr. Saul, a qualified physics teacher. I had already planned to move to teaching chemistry next year because chemistry is my passion. I am a huge nerd about the periodic table, balancing equations, and the atomic theory. So when an opportunity for an open chemistry job came up, Mr. Lynch went with the highly qualified physics teacher and we did the switch.

Why do you like chemistry?

When I was in 4th grade my 4th grade teacher made us memorize the periodic table and we played element bingo and I got really good at it. And we built our own rockets and our own circuits. In high school I had a really good teacher so I took chemistry twice. Lastly, I find how the atomic theory has developed from rough ideas and how limited it used to be to how it is now is fascinating.

Why did you choose to work at Nex Gen?

I came to Albuquerque 10 years ago and I started at McKinley Middle school. The first director of nex+Gen, Dr. Michael Stanton, held a workshop at McKinley over spring break and I was hooked on the idea of project based learning and I knew I would teach at this school someday and I wanted to work in Chemistry.

Were you part of the founding teachers of Nex Gen?

I was not, but know the history of nex+Gen and it was like my soulmate.

How long have you worked here?

This is my fourth year.

Now, five questions about her home life:

Do you have any pets?

No pets because of allergies and I am a workaholic, but I am frequently asked to dogsit.

Do you have any kids?
