On Monday, April 15th, the Albuquerque City Council approved an amended version of a bill that limits the use of single-use plastic bags. The bill is called the Clean and Green Retail Ordinance which prohibits businesses from giving single-use plastic bags to customers at the point of sale. When the bill was first introduced it would have banned providing foam food containers and restricted plastic straws but these components were amended out. Dry cleaners and restaurants were also amended out of this bill. The first offense of this ban will result in a warning, but the penalties can eventually rise to $250. The ban will take effect on January 1st, 2020.
